Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is ‘a condition of full physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of illness and disease’. A wide variety of definitions have historically been used for these purposes. Some have suggested a state of physical and emotional well being; others have suggested mental health. For the purposes of this article, the term ‘well being’ will be used Home depot health check. Mental health is the ability to perceive and experience things objectively. Mental health also encompasses the ability to develop adaptive behaviors and the capacity for happiness, sadness, humor and anger.
The concept of healthy mental health and well being has been around for some time. However, it was not until relatively recently that we started to pay attention to our mental health, and therefore our physical health. It is now accepted that both are intertwined. The absence of one does not equal the presence of the other. The goal is to manage both so that they work together and compliment each other.
There are many challenges inherent in defining and combating mental illnesses. Firstly, most people with psychiatric disorders do not become ill, or even experience psychological distress, until they become very sick. Illness can then set in, resulting in either a physical disease or a state of depression. In addition, the definition of a mental disorder is very vague, and there is a possibility that there may be more than one type of mental disorder. When this occurs, the effort becomes to get a handle on all of them and find the cure.
Another problem is the definition of disability. People with disabilities must be able to function without the assistance of others. If they cannot perform ordinary activities, the issue of their impairment is not dealt with. This lack of ability to participate in society leads to isolation, depression, and the like. However, most illnesses are the result of a deficiency in what society considers to be normal, functional behavior.
Financial health encompasses the lack of health. Illness often causes a reduction in income and creates problems with day-to-day life. There is a loss of independence, increased risk of injury or accidents, and a feeling of being unable to cope. A clear example is the fact that people with mental illness are far more likely to have financial problems than the average person. This is a great disadvantage in the pursuit of happiness, and requires a serious rethinking of the definition of mental well-being.
The absence of a clear definition leaves us in a position of not knowing how to appraise our situation, and makes us vulnerable to medical and social interventions that do not always lead to the desired outcome. The definition of healthy can vary enormously, from a person being healthy if they have a balanced diet and exercise regularly, to someone being healthy only if they are terminally ill with a fatal disease. The recent focus on prevention and maintaining a healthy weight has resulted in many people happily living a long and full life, even after experiencing early onset stages of certain diseases.
