Computer Games Are Not a Game – They Are a Product

A game is a structured type of interactive play, normally undertaken for fun or entertainment, sometimes also used as an educational instrument. Games are different from work, which frequently is carried out only for remuneration, and in comparison to art, which is almost F95zone always an expression of personal or artistic interests. In many ways, games fall into the category of being both a collective and individual action. Games can be found in various forms such as board games, computer games, word games, musical instruments, sport games, puzzles, riddles, racing games, and others. A common feature that all these games have is that the participant, the player, is engaged in an activity that requires him to use his brain in a process of critical thinking, contemplation, and problem solving.

Computer games require players to use some sort of computer program in order to engage in the activity. The types of computer programs used may be text-based programs, word processors, computerized arcade games, or game platforms. It could be a game like Scrabble, Tetris, Pac Man, Orator, or a board game such as Chutes and Ladders. Each of these games requires the players to think critically, create strategies, and come up with tactics in order to beat their opponents. There are literally hundreds of computer programs on the market today designed to help people do these things.

When I was a child, my favorite game was a simple board game we would play in the back yard. The rules were very simple, we didn’t need any special tools, we played for hours every day, and it was lots of fun. Since then I have played computer games, text based ones, video games, and even board games. When I look back on my childhood I can’t help but wonder how much more enjoyable those times were than they are now. If you define the words “gamble” and “brag” to the person who invented the game, they probably did not receive a lot of praise or kudos for their efforts. In today’s world that seems silly to me.

Computer games need no creativity or new rules in order to be fun. The fact is, when someone plays a video game, the only thing that needs to be invented is a controller and a game pad. If you want to make a competitive game, all you need to do is add graphics, sounds, special commands, or opponents and you have already defined a game. The best designers don’t have to reinvent the wheel, they simply need to tweak the existing rules to suit their purposes. That’s why I believe the definition of ‘game’ should simply be a computer program that helps define the rules of a game.
